About Energy 106
1996 The Beginning
Energy 106.6 was founded in 1996 by Lawrence John, a pioneer of Northern Ireland’s pirate radio scene.
The station began as a weekend-only broadcast from the hills above Belfast, quickly gaining attention for its daring dance and club sound.
Not long after, authorities raided the operation but the setback only fuelled the ambition behind the brand.
1997-1998 The Move to Alien Mountain
Refusing to give up, Lawrence moved Energy 106 south to a more secure transmitter site known as “Alien Mountain”, on the Monaghan border. From there, the signal blasted back into Belfast with even greater strength. This bold move transformed Energy 106 into a true cross-border powerhouse raw, relentless, and loved by thousands of loyal listeners who made it part of their daily lives.
Late 1990s Rise of a Legend
From Alien Mountain, Energy 106 became a cult favourite.
The station’s signature jingles, daring energy, and non-stop dance anthems defined Northern Ireland’s club culture in the late 90s. It wasn’t just radio it was a movement.
2004 The Silence
After nearly a decade of iconic broadcasting, the FM signal went quiet. For many, the end of Energy 106 marked the end of an era, but its influence endured through the stories, recordings, and memories of those who lived it.
2010 A New Era of Ownership
In 2010, Danny Creggan revived Energy 106, taking ownership of the brand and relaunching it as an online station broadcasting from Belfast. Danny’s vision was to bring the energy back modernised, but true to its underground roots.
2015 Expanding Into Events
Taking the brand from the airwaves to the dancefloor, Danny introduced Energy 106 events at iconic Belfast venues including Mandela Hall, The Fly, and The Botanic Inn.
These nights captured the same spirit that made the original station famous high-energy, sold-out events celebrating pure dance music culture.
2024 Strengthening the Brand
Energy Media Group Limited was established, with Danny as Programming Director, ensuring Energy was built on solid foundations for the digital era.
The mission: merge the heritage of the past with the innovation of the future.
2025 Return to DAB & Thompsons Garage Residency
Nearly two decades after its FM closure, Energy 106 returned legally to the airwaves on DAB digital radio, broadcasting across Belfast, Lisburn, Banbridge, Newry, and beyond.
The same year saw the launch of Energy 106’s club residency at Thompsons Garage, one of Belfast’s most legendary venues with every single event selling out and reinforcing Energy’s dominance in the Northern Irish dance scene.
Continuing the Legacy
Energy 106 proudly features original 106.6 DJs Stevie B, Dru R, and Tommy B still part of the brand today.
Their presence bridges the gap between the pirate days of the late 90s and the modern DAB era, ensuring the authentic Energy sound remains at the heart of everything we do.
Joining them is a new generation of dynamic presenters personally hand-picked by Danny Creggan, including Colin Patterson, Tony Walls, David Ashe, Holly The Destroyer, Ryan Downey, and Gordon Coutts each bringing their own distinctive energy and style to the airwaves seven days a week.
Behind the scenes, Dani, who oversees Sales & Marketing, plays a key role in driving the brand forward.
Together with Danny, they’re affectionately known across the station as “the two Dannys” a team dedicated to keeping the Energy name alive and thriving for the next generation.
Energy Today
Today, Energy 106 stands as one of the biggest and most influential dance brands in Northern Ireland. Broadcasting 7 days a week, the station features live shows and real voices on air from morning to night, delivering non-stop energy, entertainment, and connection. From the early breakfast shows that kick-start the day to late-night sessions that carry listeners into the small hours, Energy 106 is once again the heartbeat of Belfast’s dance scene.
What began as a weekend pirate station on a Belfast hillside has evolved into a full-scale digital radio network and nightlife brand that continues to push boundaries.
The sound is fresher, the team is stronger, and the story is far from over.
The Energy legacy lives on and the next chapter is only getting started.
