About Energy 106
1996 The Beginning
Energy 106.6 was founded by Lawrence John, a pioneer of Northern Ireland’s pirate radio scene.
Broadcasting on 106.6 FM from the hills above Belfast, the station became instantly recognisable for its uncompromising focus on dance, trance, and club music.
With VHS tape automation powering its 24-hour output, Energy 106 quickly built a reputation as one of the most daring and exciting broadcasters in the country.
Late 1990s Rise of a Legend
Throughout the late 90s, Energy 106 became a cultural phenomenon. Its powerful signal carried across Belfast and beyond, reaching thousands of listeners who tuned in for the freshest beats and underground anthems.
With a rebellious streak and no fear of pushing boundaries, the station earned its place as the soundtrack to Northern Ireland’s nightlife.
2004 The Silence
After nearly a decade on FM, Energy 106’s original broadcasts came to an end.
For its devoted fans, it was the close of an unforgettable chapter but the Energy name remained etched into the city’s cultural memory.
2010 A New Era
The Energy brand was revived by Danny Creggan, who became the new owner of the station.
Danny relaunched Energy as an online station streaming from Belfast, keeping the music alive while laying the foundations for a new chapter.
2015 Expanding Into Events
Building on the station’s identity, Danny took Energy beyond the airwaves and into Belfast’s nightlife.
Energy-branded events launched at some of the city’s most iconic venues, including Mandela Hall, The Fly, and The Botanic Inn, bringing the Energy sound to life and uniting DJs and audiences under one roof.
2024 Strengthening the Brand
Energy Media Group Limited was established, with Danny serving as Programming Director.
The vision was clear, to merge the spirit of the original pirate station with the professionalism of modern broadcasting, securing Energy’s place in Northern Ireland’s radio landscape once more.
2025 Back on the Airwaves
Almost two decades after the FM signal went silent, Energy 106 made its official return as a fully licensed station, broadcasting on DAB digital radio across Belfast, Lisburn, Banbridge, Newry, and beyond.
That same year, Energy launched its new event series at Thompsons Garage, one of Belfast’s most respected club venues.
Every show since has sold out, proving that the demand for Energy’s sound is stronger than ever.
Continuing the Legacy
The station’s heritage shines through with original 106.6 DJs, Stevie B, Dru R, and Tommy B, still part of the brand today, connecting the pirate roots of the past with the fresh, modern sound of today’s Energy.
Joining them is a new generation of dynamic presenters personally hand-picked by Danny, including Colin Patterson, Tony Walls, David Ashe, Holly The Destroyer, Ryan Downey, Gordon Coutts, each bringing their own distinctive energy and style to the airwaves seven days a week.
Behind the scenes, Dani, who oversees Sales & Marketing, plays a key role in driving the brand forward, together with Danny, they’re known affectionately across the station as “the two Dannys.”
Energy Today
Today, Energy 106 stands as one of the biggest and most influential dance brands in Northern Ireland. Broadcasting 7 days a week, the station features live shows and real voices on air from morning to night, delivering non-stop energy, entertainment, and connection.
From the early breakfast shows that kick-start the day to late-night sessions that carry listeners into the small hours, Energy 106 is once again the heartbeat of Belfast’s dance scene.
What began as a weekend pirate station on a Belfast hillside has evolved into a full-scale digital radio network and nightlife brand that continues to push boundaries.
The sound is fresher, the team is stronger, and the story is far from over.
The Energy Legacy Lives On – And The Next Chapter Is Only Getting Started.
